Course change deadline

Check the course schedule for details of the withdrawal dates for each of your course sections. You can also get details about change of registration and academic concession policies in the Academic Calendar.

The accuracy and completeness of your registration is your responsibility.

withdrawing from courses

Before you take the action of dropping your course(s), be sure you understand the potential financial implications it can have on your eligibility for current and future funding.

  1. Are you receiving government student loans and/or UBC bursary funding? Withdrawing from a course or many courses could result in a partial or complete reduction of the funding you have been awarded.
  2. Are you on interest free status for past government loans? Withdrawing from courses may result in your loans entering repayment earlier than you expected
  3. Scholarships and awards require a minimum number of credits to remain eligible for current awards but also for being eligible to win an award in the next year

Contact or visit Student Services to find out more information about the impact of a withdrawal on your eligibility for loans, bursary, scholarships, and awards.

Withdrawing from courses without a W (withdrawn) standing

To withdraw without a W standing means that your enrolment in the course will not appear on your transcript and the associated tuition fees will be removed from your record.

  • To find the deadline to withdraw your course without a W standing, look in the course schedule for each section individually
    • The deadline to withdraw with a W is also the deadline to add or change sections on the SSC
  • Log into your SSC account to drop your course(s) from your timetable
    • You must withdraw on the SCC by 11:59:00 p.m. on the deadline date
    • Be sure you are dropping the course from your Timetable and not from your Worklist. Dropping courses from your worklist is not considered withdrawal from your course.
  • Verify you have successfully withdrawn by reviewing your timetable and your assessed tuition fees

If you are taking distance education courses, these courses are run from the Vancouver campus. Refer to the Vancouver campus course change dates for dates for Term A, B, C, and D courses.

Withdrawing from courses with a W standing

To withdraw with a W standing means that your enrolment in the course will appear on your transcript with a standing of W. Depending on your withdrawal date you may be eligible for a partial refund. If your withdrawal date is after refund dates, you will not receive any refund of tuition fees.

Once the deadline to withdraw from a course without a W standing has passed, you can withdraw from courses for a period of time to receive a W standing.

We recommend speaking with an Academic Advisor about withdrawing to ensure you have considered all the possible options.

  • Review the policy for the refund of tuition fees. If you have withdrawn after the dates stated in this policy you are not eligible for a refund.
  • Find the last day to drop with a W standing on the SSC – look in the course schedule for each section individually.
  • If the SSC is still open for dropping courses, log in to your SSC account and drop your course(s) from your timetable.
    • Be sure you are dropping the course from your Timetable and not from your Worklist. Dropping courses from your worklist is not considered withdrawal from your course.
  • After the SSC has closed for withdrawals you will need to appeal to the faculty that offers the course for permission to withdraw. See links below for the forms for each faculty.
    • You will be required to submit supporting documentation for your application/appeal for a late withdrawal to outline your exceptional circumstances for requesting a late withdrawal
    • Distance Education must be submitted to and approved by your Dean’s Office
