Summer loans

Undergraduate students

Students enrolled in Summer Session courses at UBC are eligible for student loan funding if they meet the eligibility criteria. While this can be confusingit is your responsibility to register in a loan-eligible course load. Please contact Student Services to make sure your course schedule is eligible for loans. If you receive loans, please contact Student Services to ensure registration changes will not impact your loan eligibility.

Eligibility

Unlike Winter Session courses, Summer Session courses start and end at a variety of times and can be as short as 3 weeks in length.

To be eligible for full-time loans during Summer Session you must satisfy all of the following criteria if you are applying to Student Aid BC:

  • Register in at least 9 credits in most programs
    • Audited, wait-listed, and withdrawn courses do not count
  • Register in a study period that is at least 6 consecutive weeks in length
    • Your study period stretches from the term start date of your first class to the exam period end date of your last class. Individual classes can be shorter than your study period.
  • Have no breaks exceeding 10 percent of the study period:
    • 3 business days for a 6-week loan
    • 6 business days for a 13-week loan
    • 8 business days for a 17-week loan

Students are strongly encouraged to select a combination of courses that span over two terms during the Summer Session. It is not suggested for students to register in 9 credits over 6 weeks, due to the heavy workload and accelerated nature of summer courses.

Graduate students

Almost all graduate programs at UBC do not have a minimum course load requirement. In order to be eligible for student loans, UBC graduate students must simply:

  • Pay full-time fees in each term that they receive loan funding
  • Be considered “Continuing Status” or be registered in course work or thesis

This does not apply to any program that requires credit registration.

Part-time funding

If you are not taking courses that match the full-time criteria, you may be eligible for a part-time student loan. Please contact Student Services. If you have any questions about the application, please read through the information on loans for part-time students.
